Kingdom. Reinventing the zombie genre.

Imagem
Train to Busan brought to larger audiences in the Western world a brand new way of making zombie movies. It focus less on the zombies themselves, or on the conflicts of human settlements, in western style, but on human feelings, on how we cope with the absurd of people becomind rabid flesh eaters, with the horror, the ethical dilemmas, how we deal with it as individuals, as humans, and as societies. How can you kill that zombie who was once your best friend, your mother, your child? Would killing be something so easy as it is in a video game?  It also brought new aesthetics: less CGI, more practical effects, the zombies were more choreographed, lots of make up and characterization, their movements carefully studied to bring a feeling of disconfort, tension and repulsion on the audience. Then came Kingdom. Kingdom is a period horror series, on the zombie genre. This is in itself unusual. Zombies in Joseon, not in moders South Korea. It is set after the Imjin wars, after the Jap...

Podem me imaginar nessa pose. Nada melhor...

Viserys I and Eddard Stark: fathers of fire and ice.

Imagem
Ned Stark  The first father I met in a Song of Ice and Fire was Eddard Stark, head of House Stark of Winterfell and Lord Protector of the North. He comes from a long a line of Kings in the North, until Torhen Stark went down the neck to meet the armies under Targaryen banners, seeking to unite Westeros under one House, and he saw three massive dragons flying above those armies. The creatures had already wreaked havoc down south, on the Stormland, on the Riverlands, on the Reach, their riders were three foreigners from Essos, for no matter that the Targaryens have settled on Dragonstone for some time already, these three youths were still Valyrian to their bones, in appearance, spirit and costumes.  Torhen saw the following centuries on the wings of Balerion, Meraxes and Vhagar, and thus he knelt to Aegon I. The violet, almost purple eyes, that gave the concqueror an almost otherwordly gaze met his and their pact was supposed to stand forever. And so it was that Dragons and Wol...

HotD and the controversy with GRRM´s co-authors: what´s to do with it?

Imagem
Episode 8 of HotD gave a twist to the books written by Martin and co-authors Linda Antonsson and her husband Elio García Jr. Laenor Velaryon did not die, he had rather faked his death, aided by Daemon and Rhaenyra, so that all three of them could finally have a chance to live the life they wanted. HBO and the showrunners are still standing by that awfull choice of lighting, that let us see little of the action in the night sceenes, but the story is worth us setting TV to max brightness. I think Ryan Condal is doing a great work with the show so far, much better than D&D did with GoT. Yes, he meddled with the careful worldbuilding, but not to such an extent that it can´t be retconned, or that it shakes the core of the action, or of the characters themselves. Linda and Elio came into Ice and Fire first as dedicated fans who built a detailed lore site, and they are talented writers themselves. They managed a wiki site, wrote a lot, and refused to do something that George RR Martin abs...

The Rings of Power is a good show, in average, and it is good to have more shows of fantasy!!!!!! Enjoy!

Imagem
It is tough talking about anything "Tolkien", pretty much as it is a headache discussing Star Wars, MCU, or anything that has canon, non canon, a lot of lore and hordes of fans who really, really take it to the hearts, as in extreme? You say one thing they don´t agree, you might have hordes of peasants at your door, with pitchforks and torches, out for blood! Let me get started by saying that it is a total non sense pitting A Song Of Ice And Fire fandom against LoTR, or let me rephrase it, House of the Dragon vs The Rings of Power. Although they both fall on the fantasy genres, they are completely different beasts, you can´t make straight comparisons. They do not compete for a fact, and one can enjoy both shows equaly. Or one can dislike them both, whatever!    Right off the bat I loved the opening sequence of Rings of Power, because it reminded me of the first part of The Silmarillion, of the song of the Illuvatar, and the creation of all things. It felt lyrical, with ...

Targaryen Women and Dragons vs Westerosi Values: the decadence of The House of Fire

I remember when I was in law school more than 30 years ago, and we were discussing crimes of honour. Yes, in 1989 many men still felt that they could clean their names with blood, and more often than not the victim was a woman. Feminicide. Fast forward to 2022 and women are still killed for whatever reason a man feels right, if they feel slighted somehow, they feel they have the right to punish women, and even kill them. Our Professor in the olden days was a quirky old man, a very good attorney indeed, the kind who had little, if none whatsoever, scrupples. How to get away with murder? When I was 20 years I was shocked to meet someone who actually felt it was alright to get away with anything, because it was his job, so he put his morals and feelings aside and just did his job. As much as I hated this guy, I learned a lot. Law school can have an amazing impact on you. It is not about socratic method, case law, or practice, Law school gives you an advantage point to observe and an...
